What to Look for in a Driving Instructor

Not all driving instructors are created equal.  It can be not easy to find one that you like, and never mind the fact that you need to learn all the information necessary to become a great driver. Here are some tips for what to look for in an instructor:

1 – Look for A Professional with Many Years of Experience

There is nothing worse than thinking that someone has your best interests in mind only to find that they are self-serving. There are plenty of instructors out there who have forgotten the original reason why they started teaching people how to drive in the first place, and it certainly wasn’t for the money! Instead, look for an instructor who is professional, experienced, patient, and helpful. This person should be able to give you all the tools you need to be a successful driver.

2 – Make Sure That the Instructor Is Licensed & Certified to Teach

Most states in the US require that driving instructors be at least 18 years old and either possess a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) or an alternative teaching credential. Instructors must also pass written and behind-the-wheel tests.

Additionally, more and more states require that all driving instructors in Perth go through some form of formal training to be certified as an instructor. Even if this isn’t the case in your state, it still won’t hurt to ask for proof of certification or licensing to be on the safe side.

3 – Find an Instructor That Will Work with Your Schedule

There isn’t a worse feeling than calling your instructor and getting told that you can’t learn how to drive because they don’t have the time. Make sure that you don’t schedule lessons without receiving an estimate of hours first, and then making sure those hours fit within your schedule as well. Scheduling issues can often lead to missing out on valuable lessons. Although the instructor may be able to accommodate some rescheduling, it is far better to have an estimate beforehand

4 – Ask for References and Make Sure You Trust Your Instructor

Locating a good driving instructor doesn’t stop when you find one with the proper credentials. You also need to make sure you can trust them because they will be spending a lot of time with you. Ask the instructor for references and then contact those people to see what it was like working with them. It’s also crucial that you feel comfortable with your driving instructor, so make sure that everything feels right, even if it seems like a minor detail.

5 – Set Your Own Goals & Expectations.

While it’s true that you’re driving instructor should help you set goals, they are not always the best person to decide what those goals are. Your instructor may have good intentions, but they probably don’t know everything about you and your driving skills. So make sure to set goals based on your abilities and needs, not those of the instructor.

When you find an instructor that meets all or most of these requirements, you should be well on your way to obtaining an excellent education in driving. And don’t take any wooden nickels; make sure you ask many questions and get all the information you need to feel good about taking lessons.
